Spoken language is the conscious mind’s native protocol — sequential, abstract, arbitrary, disembodied, convention-dependent. It is exquisitely suited to the kind of processing the conscious mind does, and poorly suited to the kind of processing the IL and somatic layers do.

Sign language is structurally different. Spatial rather than sequential. Iconic rather than arbitrary. Embodied — facial expression is grammatical, not paralinguistic. Simultaneous rather than strictly serial. These properties align with the IL and somatic layers. Sign language is not a simplified version of spoken language. It is a communication protocol that operates closer to the layers some autistic systems are processing on.

The reframing the framework offers: autism may not be a deficit in the social-communication system. It may be a different configuration of the relationship between cognitive layers — one in which the intermediate and somatic layers are more active and accessible than the neurotypical default, and the conscious-mind interface that spoken language depends on is configured differently. Sensory sensitivity, intense pattern recognition, thinking in pictures, strong responses to music and texture, atypical filtering — all of these are consistent with a system whose aperture to the IL and somatic layers stayed wider than the neurotypical default.

The clinical implication is concrete: match the communication protocol to the layer the system is actually processing on. Sign language for IL-dominant individuals. Music and art for the symbolic channel. Animal-assisted therapy for the somatic channel. Weighted blankets and pressure therapy for direct runtime input. Stimming as self-regulation rather than as a behavior to be suppressed. Special interests as query vectors rather than as restrictions of attention.

The framework’s critique of ABA — and of any intervention that trains the autistic system to suppress its native processing in favor of neurotypical-passing behavior — is that it forces the aperture to narrow rather than working with the layer the system is actually running on.
